เป็นเซลล์ที่สร้างเม็ดสี พบที่ผิวหนัง มีแหล่งกำเนิดมาจาก neuralcrest (ไม่ใช่มาจาก mesenchymal cells) cytoplasm มีแขนงจำนวนมาก ภายในบรรจุ granules ที่เรียกว่า melanosomes

ลักษณะโครงสร้างของ melanocyte ในระดับภาพอิเลคตรอน,
N = Nucleus,
หัวศรชี้ melanosome,
Ker = Keratinocyte
อาจพบ melanocyte
ในเนื้อเยื่อประสาน
และรวมกลุ่มกันเป็นไฝ
หรือที่ผนังชั้น choroid ของลูกตา เป็นต้น
D = Dermis,
P = cytoplasmic Process of Melanocyte (Mel)
