Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma

The thickened, fibrotic lymph node capsule is at the bottom. The large neoplastic cells appear paler than the residual, dark blue benign lymphocytes and accumulate in the sinuses.

The large, atypical cells tend to aggregate and thus simulate carcinoma (this tendency is only slightly illustrated here). They have moderate amounts of cytoplasm.

The nuclei are large and include large, irregularly shaped nucleoli, giving rise to the epithet "anaplastic". In some cases several nuclei are situated just within the circumference of the nucleus in a pattern that has been called "wreathe-like" or, even more fancifully, "embryoid".
