1. Direct department with 45 personnel, including 24 professionals and 2 million-dollar budget.

2. Runs an internationally recognized education center, including DOD’s only veterinary pathology residency.

3. Manages a consultation program responsible for DOD-owned animals worldwide.

4. Provide veterinary pathology support for AFIP research.

5. Responsible for management of Institute’s laboratory animal facility.

6. Registrar for 3 pathology registries.

7. Interact with other federal agencies.

Responsibilities at OTSG

1. Serve as principal staff officer for Director, DOD Veterinary Service Activity/Chief, US Army Veterinary Corps

2. Develop and disseminate policies on the worldwide Tri-Service missions for veterinary care of government-owned animals; specialty veterinarians in research and development; control of zoonotic diseases; response in low intensity conflict programs; animal welfare and animal model programs; and care of privately-owned animals

Responsibilities at WRAIR

1. Manage 17 military and civilian personnel having variable levels of

supervisory, technical and professional skills within a department

designed to provide gross, clinical and histologic pathological support

of institute research

2. Manage an annual budget of up to $380,000.00 designed to obtain

equipment and supplies for the operation of above functions and provide travel for technical and professional education and scientific presentations

3. Supervise section chief with direct responsibility for histology, clinical pathology and microbiology laboratories which support this institute and other regional activities

4. Supervise necropsy laboratory that supports entire institute

5. Obtain new/updated equipment for above four labs and the most modern

pathological support/training equipment for staff/trainees

6. Analyze and prioritize institute requests for protocol pathological

support and delegate to staff/trainees

7. Monitor/guide professional progression of trainees

8. Insure military training/advancement of professionals and military/

technical advancement of enlisted soldiers

9. Participate in research protocols by insuring proper/timely pathological interaction and level of involvement, and by performing macroscopic and microscopic evaluations and providing morphologic diagnoses and formal reports as required by investigators

10. Insure timely provision of quality control evaluations

11. Complete assigned non-protocol cases and submit reports to contributors

12. Review cases of trainees

13. Attend/participate in WRAIR and AFIP training sessions/conferences

14. Represent the division on the Laboratory Animal Care and Use Committee

15. Represent the division on the Capital Equipment Review Committee

16. Insure departmental support of allied functions of Staphylococcal

enterotoxin B research, morphometrics, and immunohistochemistry being conducted by staff researchers
